Camden and Islington Wheelchair Service

The wheelchair service provides manual and powered wheelchairs, buggies and specialist seating services to children and adults with mobility problems.

For younger clients, the service takes a child and young person-centred approach, with an emphasis on choice and education. It offers a voucher scheme, enabling individuals to purchase a wheelchair of their choice using a voucher allocated by the service.

Wheelchairs provided by the service are maintained and repaired free of charge by approved repairers.

Where is the service located and what areas does it cover?

The service is based in Kentish Town, at the Peckwater Centre: The service covers service users registered with a GP practice in Camden (or Islington).

Who does your service provide for?

The service is for children and adults who are registered with a Camden or Islington general practitioner (GP) and who have a permanent disability affecting their mobility. The service is not suitable for people who:

  • Require a wheelchair for less than six months
  • Are undergoing rehabilitation or who are not medically stable
  • Require outdoor-only powered mobility
  • Are living in a nursing home / residential home and require a wheelchair for transit use only
How can a child or young person start using the service?

We accept referrals from general practitioners (GPs) or by another health or social care professional, for example, a consultant, nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or social worker.

Clients already known to the service are able to self-refer via phone or email. Referral forms are available on request or via our website

Children are referred to the Wheelchair Service by therapists in MOSAIC, the integrated service for disabled children, also based in Kentish Town and by Community Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists.

How are decisions made about eligibility for your service?

The service has well defined eligibility criteria as part of the service’s operational policy. Referrals from all routes – fax, email or telephone are initially screened by the administration team based on the policy, passed for further clinical screening if required and the client and referrer notified if the referral is deemed ineligible.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making/planning?

Service users are contacted via telephone, email and post where appropriate. We are a child and young person-centred service integrating the views, ideas and preferences of our clients wherever possible, within the constraints of our operational policy. Clients as part of assessments choose goals they wish to achieve and the service works to enable the client to achieve their goals. This is monitored and reported to our commissioners via a questionnaire issued 3 months after the client is discharged. The service offers the voucher scheme, whereby the service will contribute the cost of the equipment that the service would consider clinically appropriate, towards a chair of the client’s choosing.

Is your service fully accessible?

The service is on the ground floor, fully wheelchair accessible and approximately 5 minutes from Kentish Town Station. Kentish Town Road is also served by many local bus routes. Where required, transport to and from appointments can be arranged on request. We also hold a clinic in Swiss Cottage School, which is a fully accessible building.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had/or will be they be getting?

We have a highly skilled and experienced team of therapists and technicians supporting our clients. Child Protection training is mandatory across the trust for all clinicians. The service has also arranged supplementary disability awareness training as offered by a local lottery funded project, Young People For Inclusion. YPFI’s aim is to increase young disabled people's confidence and ability to articulate their thoughts and to improve young disabled people's access to services, organisations and buildings across London. Should clients wish to be involved, details are online at: [YPFI](http://www.ypfi.org.uk/contact.html)

Who should a service user contact if they want to raise a concern or complain about something?

Service Users are more than welcome to raise any concerns or complaints with a member of staff in the service directly. Alternatively, the trust offers the Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS) for clients seeking advice or information about their health service, who have concerns, or don’t know who to ask. They will also provide help with those wishing to make a formal complaint and will ensure that those who manage services can learn from the issues raised. PALS can be contacted on 0207 685 5973 or patientsupport.cps@nhs.net, it is however advised that clients wishing to raise a concern or make a complaint should contact the service directly in the first instance.

Who can a parent carer/young person contact for further information?

The service can be contacted via telephone 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday on 0203 317 5040. Alternatively, the email address for the team is candi.wheelchairservice@nhs.net
