The service puts plans in place for children needing support for a range of food related problems. Children’s dietitians are specialists in assessing nutritional requirements, food intake and growth in times of health and disease, tailored to the child’s age, treatment and medical condition from very premature infants to adolescents. We work closely with a range of professionals by developing and putting in place individual plans for children with medical conditions that can be managed by diet. We offer joint or individual appointments providing ongoing assessment and support for a range of food related problems until short or long term dietetic outcomes are achieved.

- Where is the service located and what areas does it cover?
We have children’s dietitians working in Camden within MOSAIC, the integrated service for disabled children providing a multidisciplinary service to the MOSAIC child development team, Swiss Cottage School, the feeding clinic for children with complex feeding problems and general dietetic clinics across Camden (Gospel Oak, Belsize Priory, Hunter Street and Crowndale Health Centres). We also offer home visits for children and families who find it difficult to attend clinic appointments or where assessment and advice at home may be more appropriate. Our service is provided through clinic appointments, home visits and joint working with other therapists and health professionals
- Who does your service provide for?
Our service provides for children and young people (0-18 years or 19 years if the young person attends a special school) who have: faltering growth, poor appetite, weaning difficulties e.g. delayed weaning and inappropriate weaning, physical feeding difficulties, behavioural feeding difficulties including children on the autism spectrum with selective eating, specific nutrient deficiencies e.g. iron deficiency anaemia, food hypersensitivity e.g. milk intolerance, home enteral tube feeding, gastrointestinal disorders e.g. coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease, short bowel, malabsorption, reflux/ gastro-oesaphageal reflux/ GORD/ persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation We also provide advice for, pre-term infants with feeding problems, vegan and vegetarian children and young people, healthy eating (for children who are not overweight or obese) Our service is not designed for children and young people with some other nutrition and diet-related problems, including: overweight and obesity who should be directly referred to Apples and Pears service, newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes – who are looked after by a consultant led specialist service, metabolic disorders – who are looked after by a specialist service at GOSH, liver disease – who are looked after by a specialist service at Kings College Hospital, renal/ kidney disease (e.g. altered potassium diets) – who are looked after by a specialist service at GOSH, eating disorders i.e. Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa – who are referred to a specialist unit/service
- How can a child or young person start using the service?
We provide a free service for children requiring dietary advice. A parent can refer their child or a child or young person can self-refer to the service. A referral can also be made by any health professional, member of special school staff, support worker or social worker. Children are usually seen within 4 weeks of referral, but this may be sooner if there are concerns about a child being underweight or has been discharged from hospital requiring a tube feed due to feeding or swallowing problems.
- How are decisions made about eligibility for your service?
Referrals are reviewed by paediatric dietitians and decisions made according to each child’s needs. Parents/young people will be involved in the decision making process where possible and any queries they have will be answered as fully as possible. We will always discuss decisions with parents and if appropriate the child.
- How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making/planning?
We use a variety of resources including a selection of diet sheets that have been developed by children’s dietitians nationally for specific dietary conditions. Some of these are available in languages other than English. We have access to both language interpreters where English is not the first language and sign language support and interpreters for families and children who are deaf or have a hearing impairment. We always discuss how children are doing with their parents during appointments and we provide our contact details so that parents/carers can access advice or support between appointments.
- Is your service fully accessible?
All venues where children and young people are seen are wheelchair accessible with disabled toilet and changing facilities. We arrange home visits for service users who find it difficult to access services.
- What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had/or will be they be getting?
Our staff are specially trained and are also required to attend regular mandatory equality and diversity training.
