Camden School Nursing Service

Central & North West London NHS Trust delivers the school nursing service in Camden. We promote positive health outcomes for school age children and young people to help them reach their full educational potential and not be disadvantaged through ill health. When necessary, we provide additional support for children and young people with special educational needs to improve their health.

We work in partnership with families, children and schools and offer a child-centred service. We also support the safeguarding of children and young people in school and contribute to any early intervention work.

Some of the services we provide to different age groups are:
• Age 4/5+ (Reception) school entry health review, vision and hearing screening, selective health assessments with parents/carers, National Child Measurement Programme, targeted BCG immunisation.
• Age 10 (Year 6): National Child Measurement Programme
• Age 11+ (Year 7): transfer into secondary schools health review, group health promotion, targeted BCG immunisation
• Age 12+ (Year 8): HPV vaccination
• Age 14+ (Year 10): health promotion programmes, school leaver booster immunisations – diphtheria, tetanus, polio, MMR

Our service also works to ensure that children and young people are encouraged and enabled to take responsibility for their own health and to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Where is the service located and what areas does it cover?

Our offices are based at Gospel Oak and Hunter Street Health Centres and work in all Camden schools across the whole of Camden.

Who does your service provide for?

Our service is available to all children from of 4 to 19 years of age attending school in Camden.

How can a child or young person start using the service?

All children receive a health assessment when they start school and the ‘named nurse’ for the school keeps under review all children with ongoing health needs. School staff and paediatricians can make a referral to the service by contacting the named nurse through the school. Parents can self-refer to the service through the school. Just ask at your child’s school for contact details of the ‘named nurse’.

How are decisions made about eligibility for your service?

All children attending Camden schools from the age of 4 - 19 are eligible.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making/planning?

We send information about immunisations directly to each family before the immunisation programmes start each year. Interpreters are available if needed and we also have community engagement workers who work with families. We go to schools parent evenings and informal school events to support parents with health concerns about their children – particularly around emotional health issues.

Is your service fully accessible?

Service delivery takes place in schools, which are accessible.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had/or will be they be getting?

School nurses all have training relating to developmental delay and the management of health conditions. Staff also receive Safeguarding children training.

Who should a service user contact if they want to raise a concern or complain about something?

If you would like to raise a concern or make a complaint you can contact Sally Lydamore, School Nursing Service Manager by calling 020 3317 5849 or by email to sally.lydamore@nhs.net. Alternatively, you can contact Queenie Oboh, Deputy School Nursing Service Manager by calling 020 3317 5857 or by email to queenie.oboh@nhs.net.
