Where is the service located and what areas does it cover?

The service is located in the Northern Health Centre and delivered by Whittington Health staff.

Who does your service provide for?

We offer a service to all children and young people between the ages of 6 months and 19 years (if still in education) in Camden if there are concerns about hearing problems. www.whittington.nhs.uk

How can a child or young person start using the service?

We accept referrals from a child’s GP, School Nurse, Health Visitor and other Health Professionals who may be involved with the child, such as a Speech and Language Therapist or Paediatrician. New born Hearing Screeners (NHSP) who test baby’s hearing in hospital may also refer for particular follow up. Waiting times vary, but most children are offered appointments within 2 months of referral.

How are decisions made about eligibility for your service?

Children and young people can be referred if there is any concern about their hearing and the Doctor or Audiologist assessing their hearing will make a decision about any treatment that is needed. We work in partnership with children, young people and parents, giving choices about methods of treatment where appropriate.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making/planning?

Parents are encouraged to be involved in their child’s assessment and treatment, and we use interpreters to support families where needed. We ask families to comment on their experience of the service, and hold focus groups to ascertain service users’ views, so that we can make improvements to the service to make it better. Parents are provided with written reports after assessment, which details their child’s strengths and needs and outlines the plan of care for the child.

Is your service fully accessible?

The Northern Health Centre is wheelchair accessible, with a lift. There are disabled changing and toilet facilities. The waiting area and clinic rooms are child-friendly.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had/or will be they be getting?

All staff undertakes a range of training including equity and diversity, and managing sensitive information. Specialist clinicians have a broad range of training in many aspects of Special Educational Needs and Disability and are expected to update their knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis.

Who should a service user contact if they want to raise a concern or complain about something?

Families can telephone the department directly on 020 442 6524, or contact the Service Manager, Jasweer Kaur Singh jasweersingh@nhs.net, or the Assistant Director, Sarah Hulme sarahhulme@nhs.net.
