KIDS

KIDS provides a range of services in addition to Short Breaks. We provide short breaks at home and in the community, for children and young people with disabilities aged 0-18 within the borough of Camden. Children choose to go to parks, museums, shopping, swimming, play at home, go to clubs, indoor or outdoor play facilities and more.

Kids Camden also provides the following services to families with a disabled child:

  • Siblings groups twice a year
  • Home Learning for Under 5's
  • Family Information and Support Advice sessions
  • Specialist under 5 drop-in sessions
  • Mediation Service
  • Specialist parent forum and parent participation service
  • Key worker service and Independent support workers around EHC plans

Self-referrals accepted, except for home-based respite care where referrals must be made by a social care worker or via the Integrated Service for Disabled Children. Children's workers wanting to make a referral to this service should use the eCAF form.

Where is the service located and what areas does it cover?

Our temporary office is at 7-9 Elliot’s Place, London N1 8HX, we hope to be based in a Camden office soon. We cover the whole borough of Camden.

Who does your service provide for?

We provide Short Breaks to Disabled Children and Young People aged 0-18 who have been referred to us through MOSAIC.

How can a child or young person start using the service?

They or their parents need to speak to the Short Breaks Assessor or their Social Worker at MOSAIC, and if appropriate they will refer to us.

How are decisions made about eligibility for your service?

Decisions about eligibility for our service is made by a panel of professionals at MOSAIC.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making/planning?

We communicate according to the abilities and needs of the Child/Young Person. Verbally, using Makaton, PECS or any other method of communication that is used or understood by that child. We ask children and young people what they want to do with their time and give them reasonable choices, taking into account their interests, needs and keeping costs to a minimum. We also involve parents in the planning of Short Breaks.

Is your service fully accessible?

Our service is accessible. We try to ensure we use facilities that are accessible to the individual children, according their specific needs.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had/or will be they be getting?

Our staff receive an on-going and comprehensive package of training including: Safeguarding, 1st Aid, Lifting and Handling, Training around the specific disabilities and needs of the child/young person i.e. Makaton, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), epilepsy training, administration of medication, understanding Autism, managing challenging behaviour.
