On a Mencap supported internship, young people with education, health and care plans (EHCPs), aged 16-24 are supported to move from education into employment. Over an academic year starting in September, young people on the programme complete:
- classroom learning about the world of work and skills needed for the workplace like how to make a CV and prepare for interviews, time management, and communication skills.
- 420 hours of work experience. This can be with employers in lots of different sectors. Employers we work with include Greene King, Mitie, Delfont Mackintosh, Guinness World Records, The Financial Times and Sanctuary Care.
For learners who are not yet ready to complete the required number of work experience hours, we also have a study programme option. This is a year-long programme in which learners focus more on classroom activity, with some more limited work experience and other forms of employer engagement. The aim for learners on the study programme is to move on to the supported internship the following year. We run supported internships across London. Our nearest programme to Camden is our central London programme which has a classroom on Holloway Road in Islington. Our North West London programme that has a classroom in Barnet, may also be accessible for some Camden residents. The work experience element of the supported internship will take place in a range of other locations in the community and we may be able to source opportunities closer to learners' homes. All our programmes are open to young people from neighbouring or nearby boroughs who are able to travel. The programme starts each year in September and we are open to discuss potential enrolment throughout the year so please get in touch if you would like to find out more.
