Camden Local Area SEND Strategy: Interim Position Statement

A Camden Local Area SEND strategy has been in place since 2016. The strategy was due for a refresh at the end of 2020. However, the global pandemic has meant a delay, in part due to the significant additional work being placed on all Councils and in particular our Health colleagues, and more importantly, so we can ensure that children and young people with SEND and their parents/carers are able to take part in developing the strategy (co-production).

It will be particularly important to consider the impact of the global pandemic on children and young people with SEND so we can identify any emerging areas of need as a result of the pandemic, for example, in relation to children and young people’s mental health.

In order to make sure our refreshed Local Area SEND Strategy is co-produced in an authentic way, we want to hear from as many stakeholders as possible during the development stage (co-design) of the process as well as the formal consultation stage.  We will do this by seeking feedback from children and young people with SEND and their parents/carers. This is because we know that the children and young people with SEND and their families who use our local services, are those that are best placed to help design and inform the areas of the service that are most important. In essence we need their insight and expertise to build on and improve our Local Area SEND offer.

We will also be seeking feedback and engagement from a broad range of colleagues and professionals across Education, Health and Social Care.

A variety of approaches will be used as we know that one approach is not suitable for everyone and we want to ensure we reach as many as we can through this process. These could include

  • virtual focus groups
  • surveys/questionnaires
  • Interviews
  • drop-in sessions held in local communities
  • feedback from individuals or groups, using existing networks where possible.

This will ensure as a local area we can co-produce and agree:

  • Our priorities for children and young people with SEND.
  • How we will measure our services and performance outcomes

We will be publishing a schedule of engagement events over the coming months so that we can ensure the draft strategy has been co- designed ahead of the formal consultation process. We want to hear from as wide a range of groups as is possible. This feedback will be used to produce a draft Local Area SEND strategy for formal consultation during the months of June and July 2022.

We intend to publish our final refreshed Local Area SEND strategy before the end of September 2022. The final strategy will be in place from 2022 - 2027. We will report on progress towards outcomes annually alongside a summary of key statistics, which will be on our local offer website.

Please note that until such a time that a refreshed Local Area SEND Strategy is published  the current Local Area SEND Strategy (2016-2020) remains in place and can be found here.
