Schools’ Special Educational Needs Educational Psychology Service (Camden Council)

Provides consultation, support and advice on the support for children and young people with social emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) set out in their Education, Health and Care Plan or Statement of Special Educational Needs. The service provides an educational ‘pathway’ for children and young people  0–25 years old which helps to ensure they are able to access a broad and balanced National Curriculum, are included in the appropriate educational setting to meet their educational, emotional and social needs, make good progress towards National Curriculum targets, develop life skills and coping skills in response to their difficulties. They can offer a range of support through a ‘stepped’ model. Advice and guidance can be sought by school staff or parents. They can meet with parents and school staff and talk through any social, emotional or behavioural difficulties that children or young people may be experiencing and offer support about what to do to help improve the situation. If difficulties persist, there are opportunities to talk with specialist teachers and/or educational psychologists who provide specialist education and support and advice for staff and parents in the education settings. Children and young people are only placed in a specialist setting if they have a range of social, emotional and behavioural needs which mean they require an adapted curriculum, access to specialist support and individual programmes. For primary school age children they have specialist provision in Robson House Pupil referral Unit (PRU). Children who are excluded from their primary school can also be placed in a Pupil Referral Unit. For secondary school age young people ther is provision at the Camden Centre for Learning (CCfL). There is also support offered for mental health needs (e.g. school phobia/anxiety) and this can be accessed through the Thomas Group on a short-term basis and also through the Royal Free Hospital School. A referral from a consultant is required to access provision in the Royal Free Hospital School. In addition the service supports parents to access Parent Support Programmes/Training for help in meeting their children’s social, emotional and behavioural needs e.g. Marlborough Group Family Training, Video Interaction Guidance. Ongoing support can also be provided to parents through their child’s school.
