SENDIASS (Camden Council)

(Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service . Formerly known as Parent Partnership Service)

A statutory service providing impartial information, advice and support to parent carers of children with special educational needs or a disability, children and young people aged 16-25, about education, health and social care. Direct support is provided in connection with the Education Health & Care planning process, school-based help, exclusions, bullying, disability discrimination and transport. The service aims to empower and enable families to become active partners in their children’s education by providing support, training and an opportunity to join groups of other parents/carers and young people.

Where is the service located and what areas does it cover?

The Service is located at Highgate Newtown Community Centre, close to the border with Islington and is available to all Camden residents.

Who does your service provide for?

The Service provides support for all types of SEN and disability within the age range 0 - 25. There are no formal criteria for accessing the Service – anyone who has a concern or a query is encouraged to self-refer.

How can a child or young person start using the service?

Direct contact is encouraged and the Service is provided free of charge. There is currently no waiting list to access the Service.

How are decisions made about eligibility for your service?

Eligibility for support is set out in statutory guidance, the multi-agency steering group and local service-users.

How do you communicate with service users and how are they involved in decision making/planning?

The Service provides a wide range of flyers, information packs, guidance sheets and training materials. Information is collected from users routinely and informs future developments and practice. There are close links with the Parent/Carer Forum and contact is maintained with users to ensure they are kept informed of future developments. Service users are regularly involved in consultations about local and national issues. A Training programme for parents/carers runs each term.

Is your service fully accessible?

The Centre is fully wheelchair accessible with a suitable lift and toilet facilities. In May 2015 the Centre is being rebuilt which will further enhance the current facilities. There is flexibility within the Centre and waiting areas are available.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had/or will be they be getting?

All staff have received training on the Children and Families Act 2014, SEN Code of Practice, Equality Act, IPSEA SEN Adviser's Legal Training and other major pieces of legislation.
